John Seigenthaler is hopping mad
over his entry on Wikipedia. And after reading his Op/Ed (via USA Today/Yahoo), I'm inclined to feel that he's justified. He speaks of the difficulty of getting the entry corrected:
For four months, Wikipedia depicted me as a suspected assassin before Wales erased it from his website's history Oct. 5. The falsehoods remained on Answers.com and Reference.com for three more weeks.
I've seen lots of blog posts over the last year questioning the reliability of Wikipedia. I think it just shows that you get what you pay for.
Here's the corrected Wikipedia entry.

About a week ago, I posted about the scandalous Wikipedia post claiming the John Seigenthaler was a suspected assasin. John had written a blistering editorial in USA Today about it, and apparently it resonated - at least a little: SAN... Read More

The comment was libel. It says that evidence links Seigenthaler to two assassinations. Whoever libelled Seigenthaler should be sued for defamation of character, but Seigenthaler doesn't know who did it and would have to sue Bellsouth to find out. I think he should do this. And I think he should also sue the Wikimedia Foundation. In this case, the perpetrator apparently did not use a login name, but just posted so that the IP address showed. However, if he had used a login name (you don't even need an email address to do this; just make up a name and start an account), then the IP address would have been hidden. If that had been the case, Seigenthaler would have had to sue Wikimedia Foundation to first get the IP address, and then sue Bellsouth. This sorry structure is an open invitation for vandals, and the Foundation should be held responsible.
