Blogrolling, Why Are You Blocking Me?
You may have noticed that my position in the 101st Fighting Keyboardist list isn't updating. I have, and when I publish a post, I get "Ping 'http://rpc.blogrolling.com/pinger/' failed: HTTP error: 404 Not Found (IP: 130.76.96.17)" in my error log.
This condition has existed for a while, so I make it a habit of using their ping form as well. Recently even that stopped working - it's only updated twice in the last couple of weeks (the most recent was yesterday, and caused me to delay this post).
I've sent emails to Blogrolling support, they've gone unanswered save for an automated reply promising that someone would get back to me.
Now, I know some would say that since Blogrolling is free, I have no reasonable expectation of any level of service at all - and to a large extent, you'd absolutely correct.
Regardless, I'd still like to know why. I don't ping unless I have a new post, and Don't Go Into The Light is relatively inoffensive compared to many other blogs. To me, there appears to be no reason why I am being blocked. If they felt I pinged one too many times, I can accept that, even if I disagree with their assessment. But then I'd like to know why they still accept automated pings from a blog that hasn't posted in four months? Just asking.

We have the same problem that LB over at Don't Go Into the Light has: Blogrolling is not updating our sites after we make new posts. In other words, if you check the DCBA blogroll down on the right side... Read More
As some of you may recall, Blogrolling has not been updating me (along with, apparently, quite a few others as well) in their database when I ping, either through Movable Type or manually through their ping page. Hube (who blogs... Read More

We've had the same problem recently. We have Blogrolling on our auto ping form (when we post), but it hadn't been working. So, we began using the manual ping form. Then that stopped working. I don't know what's up.
What strikes me as odd is the large number of blogs who do get updated. What are they doing that we're not????
I just sent an e-mail query about the problem. Will advise you if I hear anything. BTW, check your e-mail!
Hube, I checked my email, but whatever you sent didn't make it - although in the last half hour, I did receive a lovely invitation to purchase pharmaceuticals from neighboring countries and three other emails that would violate my own posting rules if I described them.
Can you try again?
Update: Got it - thanks!
I just got the following response from Blogrolling:
Hello,
Please review our FAQ on pings here: http://www.blogrolling.com/docs_ping.phtml
We are currently working on a new version of BlogRolling with updated features and some fixes to commonly encountered problems, such as pinging and some formatting issues.
We don't have a set timeframe as to when those fixes will be released, but they are being actively developed.
You can check our peer support forums at http://forums.blogrolling.com for help, though we are looking into your issue and expect it to be resolved as soon as possible.
If you have any more questions or concerns please feel free to contact us.
Regards,
Beenish M.
Going to check the peer forums now...
Nice to know that they'll answer some emails - also good that they know there's a problem.
Thanks for the info - although I'm still irritated they didn't answer my emails....
BTW, sorry for the delay getting your comment published - I have the blog set up to defer for approval if more than one link. It helps cut some of the spam.
Cripes, those forums are a complete waste of time. Old old news and no help whatsoever...
Oh, well. Guess we just have to be patient.
"But then I'd like to know why they still accept automated pings from a blog that hasn't posted in four months?"
Because 'that blog' has had 200 comments during the course of that time, and the computer updates information accordingly. Even if the blogger is on a sabbatical or away from the computer for any length of time, the blog still lives on if you have enough readers and hence interest to sustain it.
Best wishes,
Alexandra
